U.S. Senate candidate Larry LaRocco backs the Public Safety Cooperation Act, which allows first respondersfirefighters, police officers and emergency medical workersto unionize.
"They are people who run towards fires when everyone else is running away. They are the people who protect our families and children. Why should they have be denied the right to unionize? Why should they have fewer rights than other workers?" said Larry LaRocco, a former U.S. Representative.
"These are our heroes. These are the people who are on the front line when it comes to our security," LaRocco added.
Twenty states, including Idaho, limit the ability of public safety officers to unionize. The bill allows the workers to organize and discuss work place issues but outlaws strikes, lockouts or slowdowns that might disrupt emergency services.
The U.S. Senate agreed to consider the bill, with a bi-partisan vote of 69-29. The House already passed the bill 314-97. The White House 0pposes the legislation.
